How to Make the Perfect Home Gym

Home gyms have always been around, but their popularity shot up as a result of the pandemic.  Although people are now heading back to the health club, many still enjoy a private workout at home.  Here are some ways to make a practical home workout space you’ll love… keep reading out blog: How to Make the Perfect Home Gym.

What the Numbers Say

A survey of 2,000 people by Garage Gym Reviews shows 61% of respondents have a home gym or designated workout space.  This compares to 31% who have a commercial gym membership.  The hybrid option is gaining ground in 2023.  Many people are adding a gym membership to supplement their home workouts. They like the motivation a health club offers, the sense of community and the variety of equipment.

How to Pick a Spot

The available space in your home will play a key role in where you put the gym. Consider using a spare room, the basement or garage.  A separate garden building may do if you want an escape.

The size of your home gym depends on what you want to use it for.  A small bedroom can house a personal yoga studio, while a basement is best for a fully equipped gym.  Make sure there’s enough space to exercise safety.  If your space is too cramped, you won’t enjoy your workout.

Elements of a Home Gym

Think about what you want to use your home gym for.  If you like walking, factor in space for a treadmill, exercise bike, rowing machine or elliptical trainer.  A yoga mat and dumbbells are perfect for HIIT workouts.  If you enjoy online workouts, make sure you have a good WiFi connection and enough space to move around.

How to Decorate a Home Gym

Your personal workout space needs to have more than just equipment. Make sure the lighting is right. Bright lights are good for cardio workouts while softer lighting is perfect for yoga.  Natural lighting from windows or glass doors is also important.  You can also open them up to let the air in!  Quality acoustics and mirrors are other nice design elements for a home gym. You want a home gym that’s energizing, calming and motivating.

Paint the space in a color you love and will feel motivated by.  Bright colors create energy and focus, while pale hues like blues and greens are calming.  You will want an area that is inviting.

Variety is Key

A solid workout plan should include a mix of cardio and strength training.  It’s a good idea to have a variety of equipment on hand so you can change up your workout routine.  The basics include an exercise mat, resistance bands, stability ball, a bench step, a variety of weights, and cardio equipment.   A fan is another nice addition.
