4 Ways to Honor Your Dad This Father’s Day

It can be difficult to put into words exactly what our fathers mean to us. American author H. Jackson Brown, Jr. did a pretty good job, however, when he said, “Life doesn’t come with an instruction book; that’s why we have fathers.” The influence our dads have on our lives is truly significant, which is one reason why Father’s Day is such an important holiday. And while we normally mark the occasion by cooking out or dining out and presenting dad with a new golf club, cordless drill, or wacky tie, sometimes it’s nice to do something that memorializes the man. Whether you’ll have the opportunity to spend the day with dad, or you can only remember him and the contributions he’s made, here are some ideas to honor and celebrate him this Father’s Day.

Establish a Public Memorial

If you want to share your love with others, create a memorial in a public space. This could include establishing a scholarship in his name, dedicating a park bench or playground equipment, or even sponsoring a seat at a local theater. Perhaps the most popular memorial, however, is dedicating a tree. The act is not only symbolic of your love, but different trees symbolize specific traits, so you can find one that best fits your father’s personality. For instance, oak trees are emblematic of strength and endurance, while the blue spruce represents kindness and love, and the magnolia signifies dignity and nobility. And donating a tree to a local hospice, library, park, assisted living facility, or worship center guarantees others will be able to enjoy the tree’s beauty and majesty on a regular basis.

Plant a Garden for Father’s Day

If you want a living memorial that is closer to home, consider planting a backyard garden. It’s an especially memorable occasion if you can design and create the garden with your dad, and fill it with only his favorite flora. You’ll be able to think of him and remember the good times every time you tend to the garden.

Of course, it wouldn’t hurt to do something extra special, too, like presenting him with a new garden bench, water feature, or backyard addition. At Excel Fencing & Decking, we have more than 20 years of experience beautifying back yards and we’d be happy to come out and make some suggestions. Gazebos and pergolas are two of the most exciting and practical additions, and we’re sure your dad will love having a special place to spend time outside. You can even customize it by incorporating a memorial plaque or plate, or installing a decorative walking path featuring the hand prints of his kids and grand kids.

Make a Father’s Day Video

Using old photographs and family movies, assemble a video tribute set to his favorite music. You can personalize it with interviews with family members sharing their favorite stories and expressing their feelings of appreciation and love. Hold a special showing at your Father’s Day celebration, but be sure to have plenty of tissues on hand.

Work on His Bucket List

Help dad achieve any lifelong fantasies that are still on his bucket list. It’s a great way to make memories and enjoy time with your dad, and he’ll love having you by his side while he accomplishes his dreams.

Everyone at Excel Fencing & Decking sends our warm wishes for a happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there. If there’s anything we can do to make your day more special, give us a call at (410) 803-9499.
